Most of the year the fallow buck is easily recognisable thanks to its enormous shovel-shaped , or palmate, antlers. Contrary to most other species of deer, the coats of fallow deer vary in colour. Most of the deer are chestnut-coloured, but the colour can range from almost white to virtually black. The white dots are only faintly discernible in the winter. During mating, the fallow deer emits a loud bellowing sound.
