Africa is the world's second largest continent and constitutes more than 20% of the planet's land area. The continent is traversed by the Equator and the climate varies from subtropical in the north and the south to tropical in Central Africa, which makes Africa the hottest continent. Most of the commonly known exotic mammal species live in Africa, which is home for more than 1100 different mammal species. The best known African habitat is probably the savannah: enormous steppe areas with scattered vegetation of grasses, shrubs and isolated trees.
