Southern white rhinoceros

Rhino with clout

Despite weighing as much as 3 tonnes, the southern white rhinoceros is surprisingly fast and adroit. One moment it is peacefully grazing, the next it is clashing horns in a trial of strength. Using its sense of smell a rhinoceros can learn about other rhinoceroses in the area from the well-defined piles of dung which they leave on the savannah. Like the four other species of rhinoceros, the southern white rhino is threatened with extinction, which is why all trade in rhinoceros horn is prohibited.
